Recent
Public Events Photographed
1. In general, at eventing competitions, we provide full
photographic coverage primarily of those who have bought an all images package within the previous two years.
However, we often capture images of other participants. Also email
with your competitor number from each event for us to search our files
for your images and to receive a sampling of very-low-resolution proofs
of the 21 to 50 megapixel photographs, if available.
2. $30.00 per "image" OR
$170.00 for up to 10 web "images" of one competitor or horse/rider
combination for each event. OR $270.00
for all web "images" of one competitor or horse/rider combination for
each event. Each "image" purchased includes the web version (1200 pixel
max. dimension and 72 dpi) and we supply up to 10 full resolution
versions for each horse/rider combination for which an all web images package is bought. Once you receive the web
versions, you have 90 days to let us know which ones you want as full
resolution versions for making prints).
There
is no additional charge for web versions when used on your (non-business)
personal web site or for social media sites.
2a. By "image" we mean a limited
license for you to make an unlimited number of prints, for personal use,
of one copyrighted digital file of an image we have captured and created,
or to display said image on a PERSONAL electronic device. For example,
in exchange for $30.00, we shall grant you a limited license for you to
make an unlimited number of prints, for personal use, of one of our copyrighted
digital files.
3. Prints created with archival
materials are no longer available.
4. Any retouching, color correction,
or shadow detail enhancement is extra.
5. Payment options are included
with our copyrighted proofs. Proofs may have unique, invisible digital
watermarks for us to track misuse on the internet. Those who do not
respect copyrights will be asked to pay a significant penalty and a take-down
notice will be issued.
6. The
reduced-resolution sample images on this site contain less than 1/5 of
one percent of the information in the 21 to 50 megapixel originals.
They have been degraded to make them less
useful to those who do
not respect copyrights.

The three of us created 13,242 images exclusively with Canon 5D Mark IV cameras.
As of 22 March 2019, all the images have been sorted and minimally edited.
We start on processing the all web images packages this weekend

We photographed every rider in stadium and cross country.
We photographed dressage primarily of those who bought an all web images
package by 6:00 PM Friday, 15 March 2019.

words about our proofs: Our proofs are very small (either 300 or 144 pixels
max. dimension)

very low resolution. They represent images of great clarity and extraordinary
resolution
(21, 23 or 50 megapixels). They show only subject matter and composition

no fine detail present. Since you do not pay for our proofs, they remain
our property
and we
retain all rights to them. We create them (30 to 45 minutes per set) for
the sole

While my son and I enjoy the mental and physical challenge of photographing
eventing competitions, we have learned that very few individuals have the
skills and drive to do this well. It is now painfully obvious to us that
just as not everyone holding a scalpel is a surgeon, not everyone wielding
a large, expensive camera is a photographer. We have been consistently
unable to find competent photographic assistants for USEA Area V competitions.
Our worst experience occurred in the May, 2015 Greenwood Farm show.
In 2014, we photographed only Training and higher at the Greenwood Farm
shows. The photographer who covered Novice and Beginner Novice at the 2014
Greenwood Farm shows informed us he would not be doing so in May. If we
had not engaged an assistant, there would have been no one to photograph
the lower levels this spring.
That “photographer” was given the simple instructions of pressing the shutter
when riders approached a jump and continuing to photograph until they landed.
Additionally, he was asked to maintain a level horizon in his images, to
zoom in on the horse and rider, and to photograph a jump or tree between
each rider to facilitate sorting all his images. Not only did he not follow
those instructions, many of his images were slightly out-of-focus – a fault
that could not be seen until the images were magnified. Also, he missed
the first nine XC riders on Sunday morning.

As many of you know, eventing photography is the most labor-intensive facet
of our business and the least profitable. I allot a certain number of days
for sorting and editing the images from each show as well as for making
and mailing the all-images package discs and creating and emailing the
proofs. Processing the May, 2015 Greenwood show images exceeded the time
available and I was too busy to devote any more time to that task.
We have been subsidizing eventing photography for over three years. While
we are blessed with the resources to continue that subsidy, operating at
a loss is quite demoralizing and, to be brutally frank, the usual recipients
of our charity are neither upper middle class nor upper class. The MeadowCreek
Park shows usually cover our direct expenses. The Corona del Sol shows
are so small they will never be able to even cover our expenses. The Greenwood
Farm shows have been a huge disappointment.

If we are to continue photographing Greenwood Farm shows, we have thought
of some solutions:
A. We photograph only those who have paid 5 days before the competition
starts. If not enough subscribe, we refund those payments and still have
time to make arrangements to make money elsewhere.
B. We photograph Training and higher in May and Novice and Beginner Novice
in October.
C. We ask show organizers to pay us $20 per rider to cover our direct expenses
as well as functioning as a “sitting fee” and payment for all the images
we currently give them. We could then charge less for photo packages and
individual images. Of course, this means that show entry fees would go
up by $20.
D. Have someone (not us anymore) sponsor the still photography and have
their name and logo appear on a lower corner of all the images we produce.
The above options would apply only until my best assistant goes to college
(fall of 2019). At that time, I’ll continue by photographing ONLY those
who pay in advance. Please send
us your thoughts and ideas. Maintaining the status quo
is not an option.

Important information -----
Our sales from both Greenwood Farm shows in 2014, combined, totaled less
than 1/6 of sales from the most recent MeadowCreek Park show. Consequently,
we decided to have only one additional assistant for this show. This meant
we would not be able to photograph dressage on Saturday, to concentrate
on jumping shots. Regrettably, we selected an individual based on his portfolio,
but whose show photos are so far below our standards that we are NOT accepting
any more jumping image orders from Novice & Beginner Novice riders
who rode dressage on Saturday and the many of you who have already paid
for this package have received a 50% discount.
Proof
requests already received from Novice & Beginner Novice riders
who rode dressage on Saturday will be answered on a case by case basis.
Sorting and editing that individual's photographs was taking so long I
ultimately decided to stop. Being the photographic equivalent of a low-grade
ore, two-thirds of his images (Saturday stadium and Sunday xc near the
Greenwood barn) have not been sorted and probably never will be.

Our
standard for digital image files is being able to make very large prints
from them. With cloudy skies (or pouring rain like this weekend),
photographic comprises have to be made. Such compromises include
shallower depth-of-field and increasing the light-gathering ability of
the camera (higher ISO). Consequently, many of our images do not
meet that very high standard.
However, we have decided to give each participant ONE web-optimized image
at NO charge. These free image files may be posted on your favorite
web sites. We'll select the image that best shows the weather and
the rider's fortitude..
